Trees do a lot for us. They provide us with oxygen, shade, and beauty. This is why it’s important that we show our appreciation by returning the favor and taking good care of them. There are simple measures that you can take to properly care for and maintain your trees that will keep them growing and healthy for years to come.
A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground by the trunk. This trunk typically contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark which serves as a protective barrier. Below the ground, the roots branch and spread out widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the soil. Above ground, the branches divide into smaller branches and shoots. The shoots typically bear leaves, which capture light energy and convert it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing the food for the tree’s growth and development. Flowers and fruit may also be present, but some trees, such as conifers, instead have pollen cones and seed cones; others, such as tree ferns, produce spores instead.
A Lifeline Called Water
All living things require water. How much and how often can vary from one living organism to another. Trees are no different from any other living thing. Newly planted trees or extremely young trees require more watering. Watering helps to establish the roots of the trees which are a necessary process in the young trees life. Water deep enough to completely cover the roots and then use wood chip mulch to cover the soil. This will help trap the moisture deep within the soil. Keep in mind that the soil should be moist and not wet. Over watering is just as bad as underwatering. Once trees mature, they become strong enough to endure weather changes and still retain some moisture, as a result, they don’t require as much water.
Trimming Grooming Pruning
Grooming your trees will be an ongoing requirement if you want to keep them healthy. Young trees require more grooming to add shape and to closely monitor their health. Taking the time to trim dead or insect-infested branches is a necessity for all trees, however, when you groom young trees you help set the shape of the tree and facilitate strength, endurance, and growth. Mature trees should be trimmed at least annually and as needed. Look for any dead or damaged limbs and get rid of them.
Look for Signs of Pests and Disease
Unfortunately, your trees are not immune to the ravages of disease and pests. It’s a good idea to inspect your trees for signs of both from time to time. Generally, damaged caused by insects is easy to observe. If you see lines and pattern caused by insects, carved into the tree, you’re observing the work of a tree enemy, or pest. A disease is often equally easy to observe, discolored or weak branches are often some of the signs.
Plain and simple, we need trees. They provide us with a wealth of benefits both necessary and superficial. It behooves us to pay our respects by properly caring for them. Keep them hydrated with adequate amounts of water compatible with their age and phenotype, and Keep them groomed and looking good. Inspect them for signs of disease and pest invasion then follow through by enlisting the help of a licensed tree care professional. It doesn’t take constant care to keep our tree buddies healthy and growing, but it does take periodic maintenance and observation.
