Green is the word which is being heard across the globe, not because of being the symbol of energy and jovial nature but rather being the symbol of sustainable development and an environment, which is free from pollution. Pollution has been one of the biggest enemies of human race, challenging even the existence of human civilization if it is not controlled and taken care of. Across the world, global leaders and humanitarians are requesting people to change their way of living, inclining it towards a path which causes less harm to the environment.
It is said that if you want to make a change begin with yourself. Keeping the environment clean and pollution free is our duty and we can begin doing this by starting the change from our home itself. There are various small ways in which we can make our home greener. We can act as a source of inspiration for other by showing the path. Let us have a look at some small changes that will make our homes eco-friendly.
- Using LED lights and saving electricity
Initially, the main aim of technology was to help the development of human civilization and make the world a better place to live for future generation. However, there has been slight change in the objective of technology, with the target of bringing in “sustainable” development. Sustainable development implies development which does not do harm to the environment and maintain the quality of surroundings and nature. A part of sustainable technology is the invention of LED light, which is power efficient. LED lights consume around six to eight times less energy in comparison to CFL and around 40 times less than the incandescent lamp used previously. Using LED lights in home is a good way to begin helping the environmental cause. Apart from this, we should switch off all our electrical appliances if they are not being used, saving energy in the process. Production of energy from coal, which is the most common process of electricity production across the globe, causes pollution.
- Using furniture made of sustainable wood
Being eco-friendly can make you a little weird but can’t you bring in this small change for the sake of doing a world of good to this planet you call home? One such weird change is checking whether the furniture you are buying is made up of sustainable wood or not. Woods grown sustainably are definitely the one which the environment needs. Increasing the local products is also an option as it decreases the amount of energy required to bring the furniture to your place. Apart from that, reusing used wood is definitely the best option, if reused wood products are available. Trees are purifier of nature, so try to save them as much as possible.
- Stop using paper towels
Production of paper needs wood which requires cutting down of trees. As stated in the previous point, tree is something which can save Mother Nature and our planet. A habit which you can change to is to stop the use of paper towels. Paper towels need cleaner paper, which causes a lot of production to environment while being produced. There are more sustainable and eco-friendly options which you can go for. Moreover, these alternatives are inferior to the paper towels in no way. So, you won’t have to sacrifice on quality.
- Start reusing and recycling
Reusing and recycling are two of the principal methods of saving our environment. Try to make use of the used papers by coloring them and using them to decorate the racks, using them for other purposes and so on. Apart from that, you can use separate bins for different types of garbage which comes out of your house. This will facilitate the process of recycling.
- Grow plants to purify air
The pollution has taken a toll on the air quality, leading to use of air purifiers in the home. However, using air purifier uses electricity, which in turn again pollutes the environment. This is not a sustainable option. So, go for planting small plants and trees within your house, as trees act as natural air purifiers.
- Use Paints without VOC
Most of the paints contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), which is not good for environment. These compounds act as pollutants even years after the paint dries, highlighting the danger they possess. So, use paints without VOC.
- Use Natural Cleaning Products
Try using natural cleansing products in comparison to the artificial ones which cause water pollution after being washed away into water body.
Apart from these methods, solar panels can be used in areas with good solar insolation. After all, it is our responsibility to keep our earth clean, green and pollution free.
