Egypt: Can Make Salt Water Drinkable With Half The Energy

0

(The Christian Science Monitor) This is a study of Egypt’s scientists  on water desalination in order to make salt water drinkable, but just over half of the energy costs compared to the current method. With this method, the future will be very suitable for applying the poor and developing countries to provide clean water for a very low cost.

The difference in this study was that they made the membrane easily in the lab with just 5 “ingredients“. It binds with the salt in the water – even level it works with the very Salty water found in the Red Sea.

“Using pervaporation eliminates the need for electricity that is used in classic desalination processes, thus cutting costs significantly,” Ahmed El-Shafei, an agricultural and biosystems engineering professor at Alexandria University, told Digital Trends. The Technique requires half the energy to purify the same activation amount of water desalination as other methods.

Scientists hope this new method will be applied on a large scale for the production of water used for agriculture, residential living and contribute to the wide – scale development in Egypt.
