In the CES 2015, Gogoro has introduced the prototype electric vehicle called Smartscooter. With smart technology, especially battery changing solution, Gogoro hopes that this Smartcooter will overcome the inherent disadvantages of electric vehicles and became the pioneer in this nascent industry in the future not far away.
The limited of electric vehicles is determined by the battery. Many technology companies have tried to overcome this problem by developing the next-generation batteries which can store more energy in order to lengthen the distance activities. However, Gogoro wants to break this limited by using a different approach: the battery exchange program.
Technically, this scooter uses Li-ion 18650 produced by Panasonic, like the Tesla Model S. With 2 batteries, Smartscooter can move continuously on distance of 160 km, and it only takes less than 1 minute to change the battery in the battery GoStation station.
According to statistics, the value of the battery cover 40% of the total value of the electric vehicles and Gogoro provides a low-cost solution for users. Basically, customers will lease the battery and pay for the services they offer. Therefore, they just buy one scooter, then rent battery to use.
They also provide smartphone application for users to monitor battery operation, determine when to change and must be changed at the nearest location. It also can remember the driving habits of each person to adjust the vehicle’s performance and maximize the efficiency of regenerative braking energy.
