Using renewable energy as an alternative source of energy in your home is one of the most important things you can do, which will help you as an individual and the world at large by making the environment safer for all. There are various types of renewable energy that are obtainable for use at home. Renewable energy is the energy that can be tapped from resources that are natural around us such as waves, sunlight, tides, rain, biogas, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy is preferred these days to reduce power consumption and save us the cost of frequent electricity bills. Below are some examples of renewable energy that could be used in the home.
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaic’s, solar thermal energy, solar architecture and artificial photosynthesis.
It is an important source of renewable energy and its technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic systems, concentrated solar power and solar water heating to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favourable thermal mass or light-dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.
Solar energy for homes
The most common type of renewable energy used in homes is the solar energy. This kind of energy is used to generate electricity by using photovoltaic cells. Most times where people have problem is with the solar cells because it is perceived to be expensive and not an option for residential homes but having to get a good service provider can give quotes based on your home electricity consumption.
The cost of producing solar energy is much lower than other forms of renewable energy, though energy conversion of solar power to electricity has low efficiency sometimes. To reduce the consumption of electricity these days there are solar powered electrical appliances such as solar powered heaters, solar powered cookers, air conditioners, etc.
One good thing about installing a solar energy device is that you can build your own, since there are websites that you could search on how to build your own solar panels, with the right materials.
This is a very good source of energy for those that have a home in a farm or the countryside because biogas produce methane gas that is usually created by the fermentation slurry such as animal waste, sewage, fermented household waste and so many more related materials. To install a biogas plant is aone-time investment and an entire household power consumption can be switched to this form of energy. In developing countries, biogas energy is very popular and can also be used globally.
Another type of renewable energy commonly used is the wind energy, this kind of energy is good for homes that are close to a sea, a place of high altitude or offshore because of the constant presence of wind in those areas. To generate energy using wind, the presence of a wind mill and a turbine is required, as the wind blows the kinetic energy of the wind is transformed into electricity with the aid of the wind turbine. Though installing a wind turbine can be expensive but it will go a long way in reducing your electricity consumption.
This is another form of renewable energy that could be used to generate heat, and it can it provide enough heat energy that could be used in heating the house. Renewable energy could be used as alternative solution in providing energy in our homes.
