Greening of IT refers to measures that can be implemented to restrict environmental damage caused by the use of IT equipment. Although greening of IT has brought about some significant changes, it has still not reached the mainstream adoption stage.
Greening of information technology is a concept that has drawn the attention of corporate organizations, governments, consumers, and environmental like. It refers to measures that can be implemented to restrict environmental damage caused by the use of IT equipment.
There are various reasons why enterprises of all sizes are showing a keen interest in adopting green solutions. Issues such as electronic waste (e-waste) and data center cooling contribute heavily to global warming, which, in turn, has prompted the implementation of green IT measures. IT vendors are increasingly launching green products that are eco-friendly. Apart from corporate, governments have also started introducing regulations to ensure energy efficiency, thereby supporting the greening of IT initiative.

Green IT: General Overview
Given IT operations’ rising energy consumption, environmental protection has become a matter of grave concern for everyone—from consumers to producers to governments across the globe. In particular, the extensive cooling requirements of data centers have led to higher power consumption, which, in turn, has resulted in increasing carbon dioxide emissions, necessitating the need for adopting eco-friendly measures.
Consequently, the whole idea of ‘green IT’ came into being, which essentially means putting environmental conservation into practice in IT operations. As a result, of late, there have been concerted efforts toward improving the energy efficiency of data centers and other computing infrastructures.
Instead of the taken-for-granted idea that green IT has to do with saving the environment, anything carried out by an IT/business operation that requires the least amount of resources can be called green. In other words, the more efficient a business is, when it utilizes the least number of resources, the greener it is termed. That said, there is no denying that attempts are being made, in particular, to design products and services that are more environment friendly.
