Handmade gifts are always interesting, popular, and have a personal touch. In addition to eco-friendly features, they are also friendly to the wallet, which is a very important thing in these tough economic times. These gifts require different levels of craftiness, skills, and of course a lot of creative ideas. In the following text, we will give you some good ideas how to make your own handmade green gifts that are easy to make and require minimal supplies.
Wool Felt Magnets
Felt Magnets are simple and sweet gifts, perfect for summer camps or while you are enjoying an afternoon coffee break. Here’s how to put together these magnets. Select the wool felts in different colors, bring out your collection of embroidery floss, peel off their back and use them as a template for background felt. Then, cut them in the shape of a rectangle, carefully line up all these wool felts, and stick them to the magnet. Beautiful handmade green gift!
Light Bulb Vases
Recycle old light bulbs and make eco-friendly vases suitable for your next party! Create these vases in three simple steps:
- Peel off the contact at the bottom of the light bulb with the pliers, and carefully tap the black glass (also at the base of the bulb) using a small hammer.
- Remove all inner wires of the light bulb (with the needle-nose pliers).
- Fill a light bulb with water and put some flowers!
Don’t throw the used light bulbs in the trash. Use them to make a nice handmade green gift!
Recycle old magazines into jewelry
Before you recycle your old magazines, turn their pages into coiled pendants. What’s more, you can make a whole collection of paper jewelry in only a few minutes. What you will need to make this interesting handmade green gift:
- Magazine pages
- Low-temp glue gun
- White craft glue
- Bone folder
- Blank cardstock
- Clear acrylic sealer
- Thin wooden skewer
- Eye pin
- Jump ring
Tear out or cut several magazine pages; fold these pages lengthwise down the center to make a coil; unfold the pages and cut them in half along fold line; fold these halve pages in half lengthwise again, and also fold the paper edges in toward the center. Repeat that step several times.
Okay, now start to coil these papers on a wooden skewer. Remove the skewer and re-coil this strip by hand. Apply glue to the magazine strip and wrap these strips along the coil – over the glue. Press out the corners of the coil using the bone folder. Trace the finished coil to a blank cardstock, and cut it out. Apply glue as well as an eye pin to the back of your pendant, and press the mentioned cardstock over the glue. Seal the pendant on its back and front with clear acrylic sealer. At last, insert a jump ring and attach your favorite necklace or ribbon to the ring. It looks complicated, but don’t give up!
In addition to these three do-it-yourself ideas, you can also make your original handmade green gift – just use your imagination. It’s a great gift for your loved one, and also benefits to the environment!
